It is meant to be empty. So who is the lady in Room 217 and who are the masked guests going up and down in the elevator? And why do the hedges shaped like animals seem so alive? Somewhere, somehow, there is an evil force in the hotel - and that, too, is beginning to shine . . .

Not unlike many of the other reviewers, I also saw the movie with Jack Nicholson, but it was years before I read the book. Until I read it, the movie had been a huge favorite. But while I was reading the book, I fell in love with it and I could not keep myself from thinking about all of the missed opportunities for terrific stuff from the book that should have been included in the movie, details and events that would have made the movie much better and more terrifying. I read the book in 1997, the year the ABC miniseries was made. I first learned that they were making a miniseries that would be adapted by Stephen King shortly after I finished the book, and I could not have been more thrilled at the news! Since seeing the 1997 movie, it has been one of my favorite Stephen King horror movies, despite its reputation for not being considered a very good miniseries. Obviously, you can pretty accurately guess whether or not I agree with this popular opinion. Anyhoo, the book is a spooky page-turner, a suspenseful, eerie, terrifying ghost story that builds and builds the tension, keeping you glued to the edge of your seat, hanging on for dear life, heart racing, palms sweating, chills running down your spine, as you race through the book, wondering what will happen next, desperate for Wendy and Danny to survive the nightmare. When it was first published, The Shining established Stephen King as a master of horror with fans AND critics. It is easy to see why! A gothic, creepy, nail-biting, horrifying ghost story that will chill you to the bone from the first chapter to the last! It is a longtime favorite that I would recommend to ANY horror fan, especially fans of the King of Horror!

Hey
So yeah, the book itself was in a great state, but the cover fell off in like the first week. Besides that, everything's great.

The Shining by Stephen King
First, I just want to start by saying this was my first Stephen King book. It was awesome. This book deals with ghost. Not just scary ghost, but inner ghost. This book is about the overlook hotel and, the caretaker who looks after it. The caretaker's son is little, and we get to see the events unfold and how he views his parents. I learned children see and know more than you think, and they have a sort of "shining" as you will where they pick up on things. I was like this as a kid. Obviously, I didn't see spirits or anything. Haha I did always sense when something was wrong, and my mom would always ask now how does she know that. This was a great book, and I look forward to reading more by Stephen king.

Scary and suspenseful
Wow!! Where do I even begin? This book is definitely high on Stephen king's top 10 list of his best books. I lost a lot, and I mean A LOT of sleep. One particular scene made me throw the book across the room and hide under the covers. The isolated hotel makes everything so much scarier! The way it snows so much there's practically no escape from the crazed father. The way Wendy and Danny try to escape is very suspenseful. When you get to that part, you won't be able to put the book down. I won't tell you whether they escape or not! You have to find that out for yourself. And the quality this book was in when I bought it was surprising. When I ordered it,the condition was good. I don't normally buy books where the condition says good, but I made an exception because it was a hardcover. When the book quickly came,I was surprised because the book looked between very good and like new!! And it only cost $0.99!! I got an amazing deal. I love alibris! And I'm sure you will too!!
