The strong, sometimes violent characters, make this story, set in a dangerous period in 19th century Ireland, a powerful novel. Cashelmara, the beautiful great house, dominates the lives of three generations of the English aristocratic de Salis family, with adultery, murder and mystery. The book is divided into sections devoted to one of the characters and told as first person, but still blending the others into the tale. This is very well written and the scope leaves one wanting to read it again and again.
