In this classic novel, James A. Michener brings his grand epic tradition to bear on the four-hundred-year saga of America s Eastern Shore, from its Native American roots to the modern age. In the early 1600s, young Edmund Steed is desperate to escape religious persecution in England. After joining Captain John Smith on a harrowing journey across the Atlantic, Steed makes a life for himself in the New World, establishing a remarkable dynasty that parallels the emergence of America. Through the extraordinary tale of one man s dream, Michener tells intertwining stories of family and national heritage, introducing us along the way to Quakers, pirates, planters, slaves, abolitionists, and notorious politicians, all making their way through American history in the common pursuit of freedom. Praise for "Chesapeake" Another of James Michener s great mines of narrative, character and lore. "The Wall Street Journal" [A] marvelous panorama of history seen in the lives of symbolic people of the ages . . . an emotionally and intellectually appealing book. "The Atlanta Journal-Constitution" Michener s most ambitious work of fiction in theme and scope. "The Philadelphia Inquirer" Magnificently written . . . one of those rare novels that are enthusiastically passed from friend to friend. Associated Press"

My grandmother read me the opening section on the Canadian Goose when this book came out. Eh, it bored the hell out of me. Well, I was a Trooper on the Eastern Shore for a few years, and a college professor talked about this novel when I went to Trooper school so I thought I'd give it a try. The background and history of the Eastern Shore was interesting, but I was quite disappointed with 'The Railroad' section. I figured it would talk about the Underground Railroad, but I thought it would also talk about the actual 'Steel Railroad,' as there are many old rail lines that pass through the Shore. Hell, one rail line went from Love Point on the northern tip of Kent Island, to Lewes Delaware, and he talked about Kent Island! Heck, on Rt 50 East Bound, you can actually see the old railroad bed from the Kent Island Bridge/Narrows to 'The Outlets' on 301 North Bound. However, he talks just about nothing on the topic, I was disappointed. Still, he is entertaining, and if you visit the area, St Michaels/Oxford, you should read it, you'll appreciate it.

Let me start by saying that I am a fan of James Michener. I love his books and have never been dissappointed until now. I drug myself through a coulple hundred pages waiting to be be gripped by the story, as I usually am, and finally gave up. The tedious descriptions of boat building etc. finally got the best of me. I am getting ready to read Caribbean, one of the few that I have'nt yet read. Maybe someday I'll try Chesapeake again and get into the story I must have missed.
