The Italian Alps at the turn of the twentieth century is the setting for the first meeting of Enza and Ciro, who meet as teenagers despite growing up in villages just a few miles apart. But when Ciro catches the local priest in a scandal, he is banished from his village and sent to hide in America as an apprentice to a shoemaker in Little Italy. Without explanation, he leaves a bereft Enza behind. Soon Enza s family faces disaster and she, too, is forced to go to America with her father to secure their future. Unbeknownst to each other, the two young people both build fledgling lives in America. Ciro masters shoemaking and Enza takes a factory job in Hoboken until fate intervenes and reunites them. But it is too late: Ciro has volunteered to serve in World War I and Enza begins an impressive career as a seamstress at the Metropolitan Opera House that will sweep her into the glamorous salons of Manhattan. This book was recommended to me by a relative, and I really did not want to read it. It seemed very long and it is generally not my type of story, however, I'm glad I stuck with it because it turned out to be wonderful. The richness of the characters and surrounding Italian scenery drew me in and before long I was reading into the late hours of night. It reminded me of an Italian Dr. Zhivago. The characters continue to separate and find each other again. Also gave a great history of the early immigrants coming to America to find better live. Enza and Ciro are the young couple that meet as children in a small village in the Italian Alps and make their way to America. I can see this one as a movie, if it hasn't been made into one already.
