This is an awfully messy murder. However, it's one in which you hope the killer is never punished, because the murderee so richly deserved his fate. There's nothing superficial about the issues raised. Maron has dipped her pen in a totally serious social and moral swamp. Dwight is on hand, also the usual wonderful cast, and Deborah finds most of the answers. Bo, Dwight's boss, finds the other. The only trouble with Margaret Maron's stuff is that it leaves you with an ache in the heart when you have to leave the book. Nothing paper-mache about the people. Nothing shallow about the themes. She is first class.
