In 1851, 12-year-old Miles is training to be a house servant in the luxurious Tillery mansion. When Miles is accused of breaking house rules--looking at an open book--he is sent out in the fields to the "breaking ground, " where slave drivers try to crush the spirit of disobedient slaves with work and whips. There, Miles meets Elijah, who secretly teaches him to read and entices him with stories of freedom up North.
