It has been interpreted to mean men who - wherever born or brought up, or wherever their place of home or business - represent interests or connections within its borders that give them both vital interest and pride in the city's welfare. The work is not complete nor perfect, but yet it is hoped that in its entirety the collection will receive general approval, as it brings together the faces of so many who are to-day worthy of note in their respective walks of life. The uses of this collection will be unlimited. It will be of constant reference value in libraries, newspaper offices, counting rooms, etc., and generally in the homes and places of business of New York people everywhere. There has been an oft-repeated necessity of noting the passing away of men whose portraits appear in this book. During its making more than one hundred and fifty have died, and those who have gone beyond were not only those who had passed three score and ten, but many of the younger and middle-aged men whose suc cesses in their various occupations seemed to augur eminent futures.
