This is the best book by Catherine Cookson that I have read. The characters are good, bad and in-between, but all are believable. The undercurrents and tension hold your attention from the first page. At the end it is difficult to believe that all the events have taken place within one week. When you first meet Rose you realise something is wrong but you do not know what. You can feel Rose's relief at returning to the shelter of her family, however, you also sense her fear of her mother. Gradually Hannah's ambitions are revealed, also the fact that she will stop at nothing to achieve them, even to deceiving her sons, her granddaughter and Hugh. Running parallel to her ambitions is her desire that nothing will ruin her good name or that of her family. When Rose is the agent who destroys the family's good name, Hannah's anger is beyond belief. Only Hannah's death and Hugh's love for Rose can bring healing. A book to read again and again!
