It's a picture perfect murder: Someone shoots Wallis Carter as he's crossing a charming bridge in the country, but there's not a suspect in sight. Carter's somewhat dubious past doesn't make it any easier for Scotland Yard's Inspector Hemingway to crack the case, especially considering the baffling facts of the case.

As always a really good plot with fascinating characterisation. Georgette Heyer really knows how to paint such clear pictures of her characters - and I just love her witty style. Anyone who's only read the regency romances should give her detective stories a chance. They won't be disappointed!

Heyer gets the wind up
This was the only one of Heyer's 12 mysteries I had not read. In my opinion, it is not her best; rather the opposite. With one or two exceptions the characters are much more stereotyped than one is accustomed to in Heyer novels. The solution is a bit too contrived. The mystery is fair (but don't read the back cover of the Arrow edition or it is given away). There are just too many suspects (17) to develop them adequately, and the murder takes place too late in the novel (past page 100) to leave room for character and plot development.
Still, it is worth reading compared to most mysteries.
