This is a made-by-a-recipe (for a surefire bestseller), 30+ years (1938-1969) chronicle of gossip about cardboard characters who meet as freshmen at Harvard University . The author does no probing, has no insights, and the (too long) book is dripping with sentiment and nostalgia. It's a so-so TV show on paper.
