Wit's End would seem to have everything going for it. It's set in a big old Victorian house in Santa Cruz where Rima Lanisell goes after losing all the other members of her family. The house belongs to her godmother who also happens to be a famous and somewhat eccentric mystery writer. There's a whole cast of quirky characters including a pair of daschunds, there are books within books and there is the mystery of the relationship between Rima's father and her godmother. Doesn't this sound like it will be a terrific book?
I love Fowler's writing and I really wanted to love Wit's End. In fact, the story is enjoyable and held my attention, right up until the ending, which came without warning and just sort of fizzled away without any really satisfactory conclusion.
Wit's End makes references to fan-fiction and various blogs centered around the godmother/mystery writer character, and I wonder if somewhere out there if there is a Karen Joy Fowler fan-fiction website, that's come up with a far more satisfying ending to what should have been an awesome book.
