After his surrender at Appomattox, Robert E. Lee lived only another five years - the forgotten chapter of an extraordinary life. These were his finest hours, when he did more than any other American to heal the wounds between North and South. Flood draws on new research to create an intensely human and a wonderful, tragic, and powerful . . . story for which we have been waiting over a century (Theodore H. White).

Lee, a different view
Most of us Civil War buffs are familiar with R.E. Lee's early years, his military service in the U.S. Army, the Mexican War, John Brown at Harpers Ferry and his days as Superintendant of West Point. His Civil War service is the stuff of legend . But his post war days as put forth by Mr. Flood are a joy to behold. Few could have bounced back as Lee did after Appomattox . An unemployed, homeless former General with an invalid wife and 6 children to support. This story of Lee's relationship with his wife and children, his students at Washington College, former military comrades in arms both Union ( The old Army ) and Confederate and the people of the South is a welcome and relaxing read. I very much enjoyed this adventure with R.E. Lee, particularly his life at Lexington.
