This is one of Naipaul's early books describing the campaigning leading up to the first democratic elections in Trinidad. He has an incredible gift of observing and writing about people, their superstitions, interactions and as a result life including elections. It is a fun book but does not make fun of people. It is refreshingly human. It had been recommended to me by an English professor and I took it along on a recent trip for something light and fun. I was delighted with it and it helped pass the many hours in the airplane.
