This is a readable description of the players and the events that led to the disaster. What I really liked is that the author first introduces the important characters, then gets to the narrative, which includes the geographic, political and religious divisions and intrigues that led to the war. More maps would be helpful but even if you never read another book on this topic, you will come away with the important points leading up to the the first Afghan war and the ensuing disaster.
