'Imaginative, illuminating and innovative' The New York Times Book Review The grisly spectacle of public executions and torture of centuries ago has been replaced by the penal system in western society - but has anything really changed? Michel Foucault has the unique ability to call into question entire categories of thought. In this work, my favorite of his series, he raises the question of how we became a disciplinary society. He traces theory of punishment from the public executions of the middle ages through to the penal procedures of the present day, demonstrating the effectiveness of disciplinary power and its application beyond punishment, to the rest of societal organization.
