The Roig family property is threatened by this union, and Madeleine's relatives object on different grounds. Xavier is a tragic figure, damned by what he perceives as a lack of feeling; Madeleine is to be his salvation. Unfortunately she does not return his affection, and, as the feasts and harvest festivals of Saint-F�liu are played out, she finds herself falling in love with Alain.

I picked this book because I very much enjoyed O'Brien's Capt Aubrey series...unfortunately this book did not match up in terms of content ..I found it dull and unexciting..the characters uninteresting and the plot profoundly boring. I had hoped for some insight to The Catalans themselves and their history and what makes them different from the Spanish..no such insight was forthcoming.
