The personality of this author and his attitudes comes through loud and clear in this little book that portrays the lives of Jews in the pre-holocaust, world. Roth was part of the Haskala, the 19th Century Jewish Enlightenment along with Sholom Alechem and Peretz. He wrote many novels. But this is a journalistic jem! Roth died in 1939. If you read Proust, you will know that Swann (Swann's Way) is a Jew in France, and Roth has a chapter about the Jews who wandered to France and what their lives were like---just so Swann.
