This well documented book is a multi biography of the four women Hemingway married. The research done by Kert was enhanced by interviews with the surviving wives, letters and literature of their time. From the Spanish civil war and WW 2, Hemingway and two of his wives were war correspondents and in some cases very helpful with the war effort. The individual lives are explored in relation to Hemingway's strong personality. Why and how each managed to survive him make for a fascinating read. Especially poignant was Matha Gellhorn's relation to him. She was the only wife who left him, wrote several books, and articles for Collier, and dined with the Roosevelts in Washington. Their life together forms the most interesting chapters of this well told story
