Salisbury's love for Hawaii shines through every story in this rich collection. Readers will share the rush a boy feels when he leaps off a cliff into a ravine or feasts his eyes on a beautiful woman. Graham Salisbury knows better than anyone what makes an island boy take chances, or how it feels to test the waters, to test the limits, and what it's like when a beloved older brother comes home from war, never to be the same.

This book is a great story that addresses typical teenage issues and confronts the complexities of race and culture as teen themselves understand the world. A great read for a teacher/student studying marine culture or island life. The book is out of print-unfortunately. I would not pay more than $1.50-2.00 for this novel as most of the copies have been sitting on library shelves(the copies I ordered had a library tag) for many years not realizing it is a best kept secret of our time by an excellent author. Some of the content is edgy -would not use with 7th grade or under. Since it is out of print- it will not come back to the mass market ...so at best it is a great classroom read aloud for middle schoolers or for your classroom library-or summer reading list- it definitely will keep your students attentive and cause them to confront their own issues as teenagers growing up in a new era.
