Why are the Elgin Marbles in the British Museum in London and not in a museum in Greece? That is the question I asked myself when I first saw them. This novel answers part of the question. With the lives of two very different women in two very different times and circumstances, we learn the background of the building of the Parthenon and how the British came to have the marbles. Aspasia, philosopher and courtesan, was the lover of the politician, Pericles and supposedly posed for the face of Athena. Pericles was the driving force during the Golden Age of Greece and the mover behind the building of the Parthenon. Lady Elgin, mother, wife and very wealthy, is the rescuer of the Elgin Marbles as they were being systematicly destroyed during the Ottoman occupation of Greece. Without her wealth and her husband's obsession, there would be no Elgin Marbles. Both women were unique for their times and faced great obstacles and eventually were punished for this uniqueness. Neither woman had an easy life and both were criticized and ostracized by society. This historical novel leaves you wanting to know more about both women and their fascinating lives and also gives you a better understanding of the controversy surrounding the claims of both countries.
