Donata, a noble girl lives in a palazzo on the Grand Canal in Venice in 1592. Girls of her class receive no education, and rarely leave the palazzo. Donata longs to be tutored like her brothers and to see the Venice she has seen on the map in her father's study. Dressed as a boy, Donata escapes the palazzo on the Grand Canal to see the world before she is shut away in a convent, and to try to escape her fate.
