In 2007 we find not so many of our children know the story of Abraham Lincoln, our greatest president. Before taking our 9 year old granddaughter to Springfield, Illinois (and New Salem). I bought 2 Lincoln books, one a chapter book, and the D'Aulaire book, a picture book. She gravitated toward the picture book one and she enjoyed it as well as used it as a tour guide book when we visited his home and New Salem. It also made a good beginning to understand the magnificent Lincoln Presidential Museum and Library at Springfield. It is not a point by point story of his whole life, and it reflects the knowledge of Lincoln in the 1930's, but it is a super way to prime young children for the studies they will have in their later educational careers. The story is as gentle and bright as the page-sized illustrations. It is a worthy and enjoyable read for Lincoln beginners.
