None of Ms Schulman's books that followed her debut novel, The Cage, has been able to match it for page-turning drama. Her genre is to examine how characters thrust into novel, frightening situations cope with them. Swimming with Jonah concerns a group of American students sent to a last-chance medical school on an Indonesian island by their wealthy parents, and the stress that arises from the demands of a demanding medical programme in such a radically different culture. The characters are well developed and the tension is palpable. It's a really good read, but suffers by comparison with The Cage.
