Fulfilling a lifelong ambition, one of our most eminent military historians gives us the definitive account of the Great War -- the war that unleashed the terrors of mechanized warfare and mass death and establishing the political fault lines that imperil European stability to this day. Keegan takes us behind the scenes of the doomed diplomatic efforts to avert the catastrophe and probes the haunting question of how a civilization at the height of its cultural achievement and prosperity could have propelled itself toward ruin with so little provocation. A magnificent achievement, destined to become a classic.

The book was well written, but did not proceed in chronological order. i e it went ahead on the western front then jumped back in time to discuss the eastern front. A little confusing at first. All in all a great read regardless.

Keegan is GREAT!
Any book by Keegan, despite harsh criticism from some circles, is superb. He has a style that engages you right from the start despite his upper class....He is British, don't you know..."keep a stiff upper lip" but it just adds to his persona.
