This book was a romp with the unhappy and unfulfilled protagonist. What many previous reviewers seem to miss is that this novel is not about plot - it is about character. I would never categorize this as historical fiction. The events of the novel take place in a very compressed period of time, only a few days, in the midst and wake of a major snow storm. This, in itself, provides a slightly surreal backdrop in which the character of Charlotte is allowed to immerse her anger and betrayal, fears and feeling of personal displacement and isolation. What she uncovers in these few days is her own lost hunger for self-affirmation and identity.
Many of the unsatisfying loose threads in this novel are outside of Charlotte's psyche. Cooney has tantalized us with their presence, but remained true to the progress of her character. A fault? Only if we allow it to be. The Hotel and it's denizens are a single character unto itself. As a character, it will go on without Charlotte - and will barely be affected by her short stay. They are part of the unsettled quality that is the Hotel. This is a place of escape. In that sense, it is not real - and yet the underpinnings are very much human: loose threads.
I was unsatisfied with the ending of this novel. Four stars for the characters of Charlotte and for the Hotel, for the lush and beautifully descriptive language and humor - which makes this unpretentious novel a pleasure.
