His narrative shows how religious revivalism, new waves of immigration, westward expansion, the deeply divisive issue of Afro-American slavery, nascent industrialism, and other socioeconomic forces put strains on America's political framework and, in the end, transformed it.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the political career of Andrew Jackson and his involvement with the Whig Party in the 1840s. I found it fairly easy to read and it had a nice rhythem. Watson goes into much detail on Jackson's political philosophy and his involvement with the 2nd Bank of the United States gets a whole chapter. It was a very interesting book.
