But then, as you cannot be numbered among those who are on the side of Christ, you must be numbered among those that are against Him, and their lot must be yours in the end. But farther, and more particularly, do you think that the bounties of providence have been conferred upon you for the mere purpose of enabling you to pass your days in the enjoyment of comforts and luxuries which are denied to many others, while so much remains to be done for the spread of the gospel in the world, and for promoting the best interests of mankind? If you do, you form a conclusion altogether at variance with the teaching of the word of God. " No man is at liberty to live unto himself," and God will call us all to a reckoning for the use we have made of the good gifts of His providence, as well as of the means of grace. The advantages which He has bestowed upon you, are given for a special end, viz.--that He who gives them may be glorified. A worldly-minded and selfish man may reason in this way, when his schemes have prospered, and all his affairs are flourishing: " I may now accomplish objects which I have long sought in vain to accomplish, I may now say to my soul, --soul, take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry." But a Christian cannot reason thus. He feels that he has got his blessings, that he may make 166 PREPARATION them available for some good purpose.
