We have, therefore, endeavored to bring together in this book for beginners reading-matter which shall be suited to the interest and intelligence of pupils in high schools, acade mies and colleges. Since the time devoted to instruction in German is, in our higher institutions of learning, usually very limited, it becomes essential that the reading matter, intended for beginners of this class, be in itself interesting and valuable, and yet, at the same time, not too difficult as regards the language. It should likewise ofi'er sufficient variety to inspire the pupil, even at this elementary stage of his work, with a love for the study of German.
