Excerpt from Pierce Gambit, Chess Papers and Problems HE following pages are, _for the most part, the result of the Authors' devotion of their leisure hours to Chess during the past ten years. During that time the development of the game, both in the analysis of the Openings and in the Problem Art, has been most marked. At first it was intended to supple ment the modern English text books on Chess analysis with the results of recent discoveries, as the books last published were greatly wanting in this respect, and had by no means kept pace with the requirements of the day; this part of the proposed task is, however, at last, happily, in such competent hands, that the scope of these investigations has been limited in this branch of Chess to the full discussion of the new Gambit (a variation of the Vienna Game) - the result ofthe last two years incessant study. It is hoped that this part of the book will be found both new and interesting: the attack and defence being sufficiently even to give, on the whole, about equal chances to each side. The other Chess papers have been carefully revised and in some cases entirely refwritten. The problems have all been composed since the Autho'rs' last published collection, and are selected out of a large number so as to preserve in pcrmament form only the best. Those byzw. Timbrell Pierce are distinguished from those by J. Pierce by being numbered with Roman numerals. It is believed that they are all sound, and the Authors take this opportunity of cordially 'thanking Messrs. Bolus, Robins and Pilleau for having carefully examined most of the positions.
