But when one puts himself in that view to follow the text, word by word, he must be singularly embarrassed. There are some passages which are perfectly opposed to it. It would be easy to excite a smile by giving some specimens of the ridiculous interpretations to which such a system would lead. We renounce wil lingly any success of this kind. We content ourselves, in all confidence, with such reasoning as may apply to our religious and moral sense.
