Excerpt from Der Neffe Als Onkel: Lustspiel in Drei Aufz�gen The great classical epoch of German literature, of which Schiller is one of the chief glories, was in an unusual degree receptive as well as productive. It gave a warm and ready welcome to the best in the literatures of other nations. Many of the leading spirits of the age, includ ing both Goethe and Schiller, interested themselves more or less in the work of transplanting foreign literatures to German soil, with the result that a large group of mas terly translations appeared almost coincidently with the masterpieces of German literature itself. Schiller's first experiment in translation was a version in hexameters of a part of the first book of Virgil's dine/id. Dating from his student days, it is a manifestation of the enthusiasm with which he had studied the Latin poet, of whom he ever remained an ardent admirer. Years after ward be relieved the tedium of a long period of ill health by turning again to the Eneid and translating the second and fourth books.
