At the age of twenty-nine, Sydney has already been once divorced and once widowed. Trying to find her footing again, she has answered an advertisement to tutor the teenage daughter of a well-to-do couple as they spend a sultry summer in their oceanfront New Hampshire cottage. But when the Edwards' two grown sons, Ben and Jeff, arrive at the beach house, Sydney finds herself caught up in a destructive web of old tensions and bitter divisions. As the brothers vie for her affections, the fragile existence Sydney has rebuilt is threatened. With the subtle wit, lyrical language, and brilliant insight into real emotion that has led her to be called 'a supremely elegant anatomist of the human heart' (The Times), Shreve weaves a story about risk, family, and the supreme courage that it takes to love.

Seller's Description:
Very good. This book is in stock now, in our UK premises. Photos of our books are available on request (the pictures you see on Alibris are NOT our own).
I generally like this author and bought it based on that alone. However, this story did not deliver. The writing was clipped and I found it hard to feel any connection to the characters or story. I don't read to get my happy on, but when I closed this book, I felt depressed, bored and wishing I had picked up a different book. Note to self: stop buying books at bargain outlet stores.

2ND RATE
SINCE THIS IS A BOOK BY ANITA SHREVE IT IS VERY WELL WRITTEN. BUT I HAVE TO SAY THAT I DIDN'T SEE MUCH POINT TO THE STORY. I WASN'T PARTICULARLY ENGAGED WITH THE CHARACTERS EITHER. SHREVE HAS A WAY OF DRAWING YOU INTO HER STORIES EVEN IF THEY AREN'T UP TO HER USUAL STANDARDS,BUT I CAN'T SAY THAT I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS. THE HISTORY OF THE HOUSE BY THE OCEAN WAS THE MOST INTERESTING PART TO ME. I WISH SHE WOULD HAVE CONCENTRATED MORE ON THAT. OH WELL!!!!!!!!!! A DISAPPOINTMENT BY ONE OF MY FAVORITE AUTHORS.

SURFING FOR A LIFE
ANOTHER GREAT READ FROM ANITA SHREVE! THIS STORY FOLLOWS 3 PEOPLE, 2 MALES, 1 FEMALE ON A LIFE JOURNEY OF HAPPENSTANCE. NO, YOU CAN 'T IMAGINE WHAT HAPPENS! THE CHARACTERS ARE ENDEARING AND YOU FEEL AS IF YOU'RE ONE OF THEM. YOU FEEL THEIR HEARTACHES, SORROWS, LOVE AND HAPPINESS THROUGHOUT THE STORY. IT REVOLVES AROUND A DECEPTION THAT IS BELIEVED TRUE THAT SO MANY OF US HAVE FACED IN OUR OWN LIVES. IT ALL TAKES PLACE IN A BEAUTIFUL HOUSE BY THE SEA AND THE OCEAN PLAYS A MAJOR PART OF THE TWISTS AND TURNS IN THIS "HAUNTINGLY RICH" NOVEL. AS THE CHARACTERS MOVE ON WITH THEIR LIVES, THIS BEAUTIFUL HOUSE BY THE SEA ALSO MOVES ON WITH ITS' LIFE AND HISTORY, IN THE HANDS OF A NEW OWNER.
