What is Un Lun Dun? It is London through the looking glass, an urban Wonderland of strange delights where all the lost and broken things of London end up . . . and some of its lost and broken people, too-including Brokkenbroll, boss of the broken umbrellas; Obaday Fing, a tailor whose head is an enormous pin-cushion, and an empty milk carton called Curdle. Un Lun Dun is a place where words are alive, a jungle lurks behind the door of an ordinary house, carnivorous giraffes stalk the streets, and a dark cloud dreams of burning the world. It is a city awaiting its hero, whose coming was prophesied long ago, set down for all time in the pages of a talking book. When twelve-year-old Zanna and her friend Deeba find a secret entrance leading out of London and into this strange city, it seems that the ancient prophecy is coming true at last. But then things begin to go shockingly wrong.

A viciously brilliant take on the accepted tropes of Children's Fantasy and Heroic Fiction, which nevertheless stands on its own as magnificent Bedtime Story fare that won't bore the adult.
Being the Chosen One is all well and good, but the world is never that simple. Miéville's contempt for "Destiny" and "Fate" is as evident as his love for the City.

visually brilliant with surprising depth
This is a wonderfully imagined "parallel universe" older child/young adult story, perfectly paced with short chapters for reading aloud at bedtime to younger kids but has plenty for the older child and adults as well. I don't want to try to summarize the plot because you can find that elsewhere, but I do want to say that there is plenty to keep you thinking about the issues, settings, characters and interactions in this book. Unlike Mieville's other works, this has a bouncy whimsy where ninja garbage cans and sentient umbrellas abound and the plucky heroine brings things to a satisfying conclusion. While not an epic like The Golden Compass, it still has some serious things to say underneath the manic action and cinematic visuals. Would make a great movie.
