I feel kind of bad because I can't think of a concrete reason for my lack of enthusiasm for this book. The premise is clever, the protagonist is likable, and the author was making a political statement. There is nothing wrong with the technical elements of style, and I certainly got a lot out of an extended author's note that followed the story. I hesitate to blame the book in a case like this, when it just doesn't click for reasons unknown. Maybe it didn't gel because the author was trying too hard to politicize the story? I don't know...but in any case I think there is a good chance that fantasy fans will enjoy this, even if I can't enthusiastically recommend it.
