Seller's Description:
Good. xi, 305 pages. Illustrations. Cover has some wear and soiling. Some page discoloration. Name of previous owner present. Ana Carrigan is a Colombian-Irish journalist and cinematographer dedicated to exploring human rights issues in Latin America. She is the co-director of Monseñor. The murder of Jean Donovan and her fellow churchwomen by government troops in El Salvador made headlines around the world. Derived from a Kirkus review: Carrigan's version seeks to answer questions about Donovan's life and the events of her death. Earlier research have settled most of the issues concerning the murder: the two Maryknoll sisters Ita Ford and Maura Clarke had been placed on a list of subversives; they, together with lay missionaries Donovan and Dorothy Kazen, were abducted and murdered, probably on the orders of a regional army commander who was never brought to trial. After the murders, the story is one of a cover-up by the Salvadoran government and military, countered by dogged persistence on the part of the murdered women's families that eventually led, in May 1984, to the conviction of five National Guardsmen for the crime. Carrigan traces Donovan's involvement to a crisis in self-identity and faith that first showed itself in her conversations with a Catholic priest that led to a radical shift in her professed values.
