Reliving a Cowbooy's Past
A horse trainer turned me on to the Ben K.Green books, and Wild Cow Tales is one of the best. It realistically reflects the economic times during the late 30's and early '40's in Texas and the West, and tells the intriguing story of an independent (sometimes downright stubborn) young man who has integrity and convictions of what is right, gathering cattle that no one else can or is williing to do. For me, the charm of this book is that the stories are most often set in places where I have lived, visited, and/or ridden. The tales are told as though Mr. Green and I were sitting right here, and he was personally spinning the yarns of his youth. When I read these stories, I was transported back to a time of which I would have liked to have been a part. Anyone who has a love for the authentic cowboy way of life or just enjoys a good story will appreciate these yarns, whether he/she is young or old.
