It is the year 10,154 of the Imperial Calendar, and for four decades the planet Arrakis - called Dune by its inhabitants - has been ruled by the Harkonnen family. But the seeds of change have been sown.. On Arrakis, an idealistic young planetologist, Pardot Kynes, goes out into the desert to learn the secrets of its giant sandworms and the priceless Spice they create. And on another planet, Caledon, young Leto Atreides is nearly ready to become duke. The blood feud between House Atreides and House Harkonnen is about to begin. Drawing on notes, outlines and correspondence Frank Herbert left behind at his death, as well as conversations and brainstorming sessions Brian Herbert held with his father, House Atreides is a breathtaking story of war, treachery and decadence; of love, loyalty and steadfastness in the face of overwhelming odds.

House Atreides is the first book in a brave new trilogy. Brian and Kevin weave a story that captivates the reader. There are so many story lines going on in the book that it would have been easy to make the book incomprehensible but they managed to keep the story lines fresh in your mind as they weaved them together. This trilogy was truely a triumph, and worthy to carry the legendary name of DUNE.

Great beginning to new trilogy
I loved Dune. Read it in college and it's one of the reason that I started and continue to read science fiction. This may be blasphemous, but I enjoyed this newest pre-trilogy every bit as much as I enjoyed the originals. It clearly doesn't aim as high as the originals. The author's don't seem as concerned about exploring some of the environmental themes of the original Dune as they are with weaving a multitude of stories and characters in a very entertaining fashion. I thought the writing was very economical and sleek. Also recommended: House Harkonnen, House Corrino.
