Excerpt from Science Economic Discussion One difficulty which is mentioned in two or three of the papers in the present series, was probably felt partly by every contributor to the economic discussion. It was to know how to present intelligible and valuable ideas in a few columns on subjects so large that any one of them might well fill the pages of an entire book. Although the invitation of the editor of Science to make the attempt was accepted with some reluctance, I believe that, on the whole, a larger measure of success has been realized than was anticipated. The result is this each paper is suggestive. And it would be unfair to the writer to suppose that it was intended to be anything else. Yet each opens up a line of thought to those who read it; and this will in many in stances prove more fruitful because it has not been tried to treat any topic exhaustively. To use another simile: sev eral paths have been described which lead into vast and ih adequately explored territories; every reader is invited to enter into them and to make discoveries for himself, in the hope and the expectation that the results Of labor thus ex pended will prove valuable and assist the progress of eco nomic science.
