And so this book is the result. When I was sitting up nights, tired and weary after a day's hard sightseeing, trying as best I could to fulfil my promise, writing in my diary, I never once thought that it would be made into a book for the public to read. I wrote it because I had made a promise to father and because he wanted me to write it. I thought it would be a good keepsake and that I could refer to it in the years to come and recall the pleasant times I had on the trip.
