Excerpt from Gammer Gurton's Needle: By Mr. S., Mr. Of Art Scholarly persons, living in academic celibacy, have often a singular taste for the manners of low life, and find in the crude humour and gross speech of the rustic a diversion from the niceties of classical culture.
