Excerpt from Hittite Problems and the Excavation of Carchemish The site may be considered in two parts (1) the great Acropolis mound, and (92) the Lower City. The latter consists of an oval area fenced landwards by a great horseshoe wall between whose horns the acropolis rises from the river. The oval covers about three-quarters of a square mile, and its fortifications are pierced by two main gates on the south-west and south-east. Outside these gates roads can be traced with tombs beside them, and also remains of an outer circum vallation, which probably enclosed dwellings of poorer folk excluded from the royal city.
