These illustrations represent the times, the men and their works; and it will not be deemed improper that the portraits of the professional engineers who successively carried through the various important works connected with the water enterprise should find a place in these pages. The portraits of the three Chief Magistrates Of the period when the Water Trust was created, find a place in the book; and it was considered desirable that the por trait of the present Statutory Chairman of the Trust, as well as the two other Conveners of Committees, should likewise appear in the volume. I early resolved to ask the editor of the Scotsman newspaper for his permission to publish the more historical part of the work in the columns of that influential journal. My Object in doing so, was to get the benefit Of a wide criticism, wherein I might find information, which I did not at the time possess, for the perfecting of my work. In this I have not been disappointed. My best thanks are therefore due to the Scotsman for its indulgence and help in this respect.
