Excerpt from Memorandum of a Late Visit to Some of the Principal Hospitals, Prisons, &C., In France, Scotland, and England: Embraced in a Letter to the Acting Committee of the Philadelphia Society for Alleviating the Miseries of Public Prisons There are some singular facts incorporated into the last report of the Minister of Justice in France, which afford much instruo tion. The number of accusations submitted to juries during the year was The number of persons presented in these accusations was of whom,1,460 were females, and one third of the whole number were between 20 and 30 years old. The department of the Seine, which embraces Paris, furnishes one of the accused for every of its population. Only 44 capital condemnations are found in the whole number. The number of accusations for theft was or more than nine tenths of the whole; and the average value of each depre'dation was 50 dollars.
