I looed for Roy Jenkins' Gladstone after reading Churchill, and being enormously impressed. As well as being a towering political figure (Jenkins, as Home Secretary, abolished the death penalty, and made homosexuality legal. Compare and contrast with T Benn, who opened a couple of nuclear power stations!), he was an extraordinarily talented writer. His prose is lucid, and his handling of his material deft. On top of which i got this superb hardback dleivered to my house for around a fiver. What's not to like!
