Inquisitor Glokta is set up to defend Dagoska against the invading Gurkish. He soon fears for his own head when he comes to Magister Eider of the Spicers, and owes favors to the bank Valint and Balk. With Dagoska falling into the hands of the Emperor of Gurkihul, Arch Lector invites Glokta to return back to Adua, where he resumes his duties to his ?friend?, and finding the murderer of the death of Prince Raynault.
The Union sends its worst army to defend its borders of Angland. Crown Prince Ladisla fantasizes of glory in commanding the troops against the North. Colonel West can not get the prince to listen to his military experience. That is not a problem for the prince for long, when West carries out judge, jury, and executioner when he attempts rape on a young slave girl. Leaving no heirs to the throne!
Bayaz?s party does quite well traveling to the Edge of the World. They reach the ruins of Aulcus, without much trouble. They learn that Bayaz is not the good guy that he leads you to believe. Luthar gets his face smashed in. And, Ninefingers and Ferro find some small comfort under the blankets.
The Eaters are everywhere! They are in Dagoska, swarming in Aulcus, and have joined Bethod?s army!
