A word of caution at the outset: For those not familiar with his work, L. E. Modesitt, Jr. generally creates concepts/facts that are not spelled out but become clearer as you proceed through the book. Sci Fi readers are used to this but, in my experience, non Sci Fi readers are less tolerant of this approach. Given that this book is an alternate universe story with a technology level slightly lower than ours presently, this story will have appeal to non traditional Sci Fi readers as well, so be forewarned. Otherwise, Of tangible ghosts was an enjoyable read with interesting themes that also appear in other works of Modesitt. Some parts of the book are hard to understand, but do not detract from the overall story. In retrospect, I find this book was poorly marketed in terms of synopsis on the back of the paperback. When it first came out, I gave it a pass since it was very different from his other novels at the time. It was only when the sequels came out, in particular the last one, Ghosts of the White Nights, that I gave this novel another look. I am glad I did and enjoyed the sequels even more than the first.
