In this memoir, writer Anne Finger explores the non-medical aspects of polio and reveals how it became an iconic disease because of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's experience. People who were post-polio formed the core of the early disability rights movement. Having been raised to overcome obstacles and "triumph" over their disabilities, they confronted a world filled with obstacles that no amount of hard work could overcome. With the example of the Civil Rights Movement before them, they worked to bring about widespread social changes in the treatment of the disabled. Anne contracted polio in 1954 at the age of three, just a few months before the Salk vaccine became widely available. Since she was so young when she was stricken, Anne has only hazy memories of life before being disabled by the disease. She writes about her childhood in upstate New York, medical attempts to "fix" her body, and her success in leading a productive life. With absolute candour and the skill of a novelist, she shows how having had polio has shaped her life, and in doing so provides a new paradigm of disability.
