Americans sponsored a Middle East peace process negotiation where the basic issue was whether Israel would accept a land for peace solution and withdraw from the Occupied Territories, in return for a peace treaty with Palestinians and Arabs. Both Arafat and the Israelis accepted the Oslo Accords, which divided the Palestinians since many hardliners still demanded complete independence and came open conflict with Arafat; there is now talk of an Intifada II.
