With her clear and candid blue eyes and interested expression, the Honorable Daisy Dalrymple finds her friendly manner leads all kinds of people to confide in her. She doesn't mind, she enjoys it, but Scotland Yard's DCI Fletcher finds it very exasperating that the young lady is always getting information that he can't in the murder cases that come his way. Daisy is writing articles, with photographs, on great estates that she can wangle invitations to, and so on a freezing January day finds herself in the winter garden of the family estate of a friend from finishing school. An unexpectedly dying gardenia plant leads to the unearthing of the body of a young woman thought to have run away to London some weeks past. When the local constable shows a strong desire to pin the crime on the grieving under-gardener, the dead girl's beau, Daisy indignantly summons Fletcher.
