A compendium of essays about Rome, its history and its people, from an English journalist who loves it and has spent some years there.
There are chapters dealing with various popes and cardinals, Keats and Shelley ( both of whom died and are buried there) the kidnapping of Aldo Moro, Stendhal, the superb cathedral of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, and the Latin language, all written in a fluid style that occasionally comes close to poetry.
What emerges is a feeling; a taste of the style and cultural wealth and importance of the Eternal City. It inspired me to visit Rome, and I suspect it would do the same for others.
